U.S. Land Office - tract books, ca.1819-1890.

U.S. district land office Registers kept tract books containing written descriptions of tracts of land sold or for sale within each land district. Entries were recorded by section (or part of a section), township and range and contain information concerning the purchasers of land. This series consists of tract books for U.S. public land sold in Ala. Some volumes are arranged by township, some are arranged by range. Sometimes the district land office is identified, often it is not. Most entries are recorded on printed forms, though several different types of forms have been utilized. Entries may include some or all of the following information - tract location, number of acres, rate per acre, amount of purchase money, name and county of residence of the purchaser, number of the Register's return, date of sale, receipt number, certificate number, to whom patented, patent date, and a cross-referencing to where the sale was recorded. Usually the records are identified by township and range number; though north, south, east, and west are not specified. These tract books help trace land settlement patterns in Ala. and provide insight into the process of ownership of public lands.
